Over the years, Kenya has made significant strides in improving gender representation within its political sphere. Introducing Women Representatives (Reps) has revolutionized the Kenyan political landscape by ensuring women's voices are amplified in the national parliament. This role has significantly contributed to the empowerment of women and the championing of policies that favor gender equality.
The Concept of Women Representatives in Kenya
In line with Article 97 of the Kenyan Constitution, 47 Women Representatives are elected during each general election, with one representative from each county. The primary role of these reps is to represent the interests of women and girls in their respective counties, thus facilitating equal representation in the national assembly.
Women Reps in Kenya participate in crucial roles such as discussing government policies, making laws, and overseeing government operations. By doing so, they ensure the Constitution is respected and that women's voices resonate throughout the country.

Remuneration for Women Representatives
Like other members of the National Assembly, Women Representatives in Kenya receive a monthly salary alongside other benefits. This comprises a basic salary, house allowance, and market adjustment, totaling Ksh 710,000 per month, per the recent gazette notice by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission. This remuneration package is crucial in facilitating the Women Reps in effectively carrying out their duties.
Roles and Responsibilities of Women Representatives
Women Representatives serve a broad mandate that extends beyond ordinary legislative functions. As their title suggests, they represent women, recognized as a marginalized group under Article 100 of the Kenyan Constitution.
The responsibilities of Women Reps include:
- Promoting the interests of women and girls.
- Sponsoring bills and motions that bridge the gap of gender inequality.
- Acting on public petitions related to women's rights and issues.
In addition, they play a significant role in mobilizing residents to identify projects that benefit women and girls. They use their position to lobby for the inclusion of these projects in the national budget and oversee their effective implementation.
It is important to note that while Women Representatives are crucial in advocating for projects that benefit women and girls, they should not be involved in executive functions such as managing funds. This avoids conflict of interest and upholds the principle of separation of powers enshrined in the Constitution.
